Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a branch of psychology which examines the manner in which an individual learns to make changes to socially significant behaviors. ABA looks at environmental reasons in which a behavior occurs (or does not occur) and makes changes to the environment to either strengthen or reduce a behavior.
ABA is an evidence-based intervention for the development of skills and reduction of challenging behaviors. ABA is an individualized, systematic approach to behavior change which focused on skill building. Using a data driven decision making model, goals are focused on changing socially significant behaviors. The goal of ABA is for generalization of all skills to the natural environment which is the core reason for parent training and guidance as well as collaborative approaches.
Controversies have surrounded ABA throughout the years. It is important to remember that ABA is a newer field of psychology. As with many other medical fields, ABA has had to grow and change through research and application. As with any intervention (medical or behavioral) there are risks associated ABA intervention. ABA intervention is a costly treatment, although most insurances in WI will cover the costs. Additionally, the Katie Beckett Waiver assists parents/guardians in covering the costs of ABA treatment. ABA intervention recommends between 25 to 40 hours per week of intervention for at least two years. But during those two years, you will have the opportunity to watch your child flourish and grow.
